🧭  York’s Hidden Cycling Routes for Autumn Adventures

York isn’t just a city of cobbled lanes and minster spires — it’s a cyclist’s dream. Once you roll beyond the city walls, the roads open into quiet country lanes, forest trails, and riverside routes that come alive in autumn.

When the air turns crisp and the hedgerows glow gold, there’s no better way to see it all than from the saddle. Here are a few of my favourite hidden gems around York — routes I’ve explored countless times, and ones that always remind me why I love riding here.

🚲

1. Askham Bryan Loop

Head southwest from the city, and the traffic fades almost instantly after the ring road. The lanes roll past farmland and open fields, with gentle corners that invite you to settle into a rhythm.

There’s a great little stop at Askham Grange Café for a coffee and slice of something sweet before looping back towards town. You’ll often find a few familiar faces and a quick bit of bike chat before heading home.

Ride tip: Plan your ride for late afternoon and you’ll catch the best light of the day — golden tones across the fields and long shadows stretching behind you. Just don’t forget lights; dusk creeps in faster than you think.

2. Beningbrough Hall & Newton-on-Ouse Trail

For an easy, scenic spin, this route never disappoints. Following the River Ouse north, it threads through small hamlets and farmland that feel a world away from city life.

The Beningbrough Hall café is a classic stop, and the National Trust paths around the estate are perfect for stretching your legs. On still days, the smell of woodsmoke drifts across the fields — it’s autumn cycling at its most peaceful.

3. Wheldrake Woods & Skipwith Common

For those who prefer dirt under the tyres, this one’s special. The woodland trails twist through ancient oaks and birch, with enough variety to keep both gravel and MTB riders entertained.

Skipwith Common carries echoes of its past as a WWII airfield, now reclaimed by nature. It’s often quiet enough to hear nothing but the wind and your tyres crunching through leaves. Take it slow, enjoy the solitude, and maybe pack a flask for a quick stop in the woods.

🧤 Autumn Riding Tips

  • Tyres: Aim for 30–35 mm wide for grip and comfort on mixed surfaces. Check regularly for debris.
  • Lights: Keep them on even in daylight; low sun and glare reduce visibility.
  • Clothing: Layer sensibly — merino or synthetic base layers regulate temperature well.
  • Tyre pressures: Cooler air reduces PSI, so check before each ride.
  • Post-ride care: Wipe down the drivetrain and re-lube to prevent corrosion from early road salt.

☕ Final Thoughts

York’s autumn rides are about more than the miles — they’re about peace, connection, and the quiet beauty of the season.

If your bike’s been idle since summer, book a quick pre-season check-up. Fresh cables, pads, and a clean drivetrain will make every ride smoother and keep the adventure rolling.

And yes — the coffee’s still on me while you wait.
